TPS2045A: Current limit vs. Current budget of power switch

Hi TI,

I plan to use TPS2045A for my design - an USB hub. The IC specification: 0.25A continuous current and 0.5A limit current.

The application budget is only 0.3A. Therefore, if a load consumes more than 0.3A, I want the power switch to detect and notify the host MCU.

What will happen if the load at USB port consumes 0.4A?

    We  don't suggest use  the continuous  current more the SPEC .

    The higher current  will let the device go into thermal protection or the lifetime will not  guarantee. 

    If you  want to use  0.4A we suggest you choose the  suitable device  for your design ,thanks!

    Budget is 0.3A, I plan to use 0.25A continuous current as threshold.

    In this case, I am picturing how the device will respond when 0.4A load attached.

    As you mentioned, 0.4A continuous current will let TPS2045A go into thermal protection or the lifetime will not guarantee.

    Regarding thermal protection, with 0.4A, I estimate thermal about 27oC.

    Regarding lifetime, I think TPS2045A can be tolerant 0.4A.

    One more thing, TPS2045A has Recommended Maximum Continuous Current. But other power switches don’t mention Continuous Current during calculating threshold. For example, TPS2552’s datasheet

    0.4A load is sure to influence the lifetime of IC as with 0.25A continuous current.

    You can set the current limit above continuous current. But that's is in fault condition.
