EMB1499Q: DONE stays high after EN from EMB1428Q goes high

Part Number: EMB1499Q
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: EMB1428Q

Please advise,

I have em1402em controlled by external mcu. EMB1428 works fine with cell selection up to the moment when all switches are closed and EN signal goes high to 1.02V. From SPI CMD reply code for start balancing cell1 is 0x81: CS falling edge while the EMB1428 is still waiting for a transition on DONE (rising or falling edge).

on CMD 0x00 return code in previous frame is 0xA0 which says no error and shutting down instruction works fine.

After EN goes high value at EMB1499Q are:

EN = 1.02V
VSET = 1.8V
FAULT0 = 12V
FAULT1 = 12V
FAULT2 = 12V
DONE = 12V

CELPLUS to GNDF = 3.21V
VSENSE_HS to GNDF = 0V

VINF=PVINF to GNDF = 12V isolated

VINA=VINP to GND = 12V

It looks like EMB1499 stays in shutdown mode. And I can not figure it out why. All value stays in range. I have 3 boards and all 3 of them does the same.

Please help. Any advice will be helpful.

  • Hi Kostadin,

    Thanks for your questions. I'll review this and get back to you in the next couple of days.

    Best regards,

    Leslie

  • Hi Kostadin,

    I reviewed the data you provided. I noticed the voltage on EN pin is too low. This is a 5V CMOS logic pin. 1.02V on EN is not enough for the EMB1499Q device to recognize it as a HIGH and I think this is why it doesn't bring the DONE pin low.

    To debug further, can you please probe these lines with an oscilloscope and provide the following plots:

    • Plot with EN (right at the EMB1499Q pin), DONE, DIR, DIR_EN signals.
    • And then the same signals but with EN probed right at the EMB1428Q pin.

    I recommend to capture these plots when you send the MCU command to start balancing and also the MCU command to open the switches. I want to see both because I'm not sure why you don't see the same fault on both cases.

    Regards,

    Leslie

  • Hi Kostadin,

    We would like to check in with you to see how the suggested debug process is going. Let us know if you have any results!
