TPS650250: Ambient Temperature

My customer would like to use TPS650250 PMIC in his application but the engineer is wondering regarding the ambient temperature range. It’s limited to 85°C but the Q100 version is up to 105°C.

 The engineer would like to know if he can also use the industrial version at 105°C ambient or where are the differences? Is it a different package, mold compound?

  • TPS650250 has an Operating Temperature Range of -40°C to +85°C, and a maximum Junction Temperature (TJ) of +125°C

    TPS650250-Q1 has an Operating Temperature Range of -40°C to +125°C, and a maximum Junction Temperature (TJ) of +125°C

    The difference is the TPS650250 Electrical Characteristics are characterized according to the following: "VINDCDC1 = VINDCDC2 = VINDCDC3 = VCC = VINLDO = 3.6V, TA = –40°C to 85°C, typical values are at TA = 25°C"

    while the TPS650250-Q1 Electrical Characteristics are characterized as follows: "VINDCDC1 = VINDCDC2 = VINDCDC3 = VCC = VINLDO = 3.6V, TJ = –40°C to 125°C, typical values are at TA = 25°C"

    The TPS650250 is not guaranteed to meet conform to Electrical Characteristics when TA > +85°C

    thanks for answer. There is an additional difference to your description that causes some confusion.

    In data sheet of industrial version is maximum operation temperature specified with 85 °C. Wheras for automative version such a specification not exists. Here is mentioned a power dissipation rating up to 105 °C.

    For me it looks like difference is just in spec. Maybe, there is an application specific solution with industrial chip possible, once I have final design and requirements, even with temperatures above 85 °C.

    The only critical parameter is Junction temperature. Both version of the device are rated for TJ,max = +125°C

    The section you are referring to, titled Dissipation Ratings, is no longer the recommended way to specify temperature ratings.

    The TPS650250 device, using the newer datasheet format, has a section named Thermal Information. These thermal resistances are more widely accepted as the baseline for estimating the temperature rise in the device due to Ambient and Board temperature conditions.

    This is the cause for the difference you are seeing in the two datasheets, which is not due to a difference in the device itself.
