TLV760: ESR versus Capacitance

Part Number: TLV760
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV1117, LM1086, LM1117,

Dear Sirs,

Is there some extra data regarding the limits of ESR for the output capacitance? (ESR versus Co)

Regards,

VS

  • Hi VS,

Per the datasheet, there are no restrictions on the ESR.
As ESR increases, the capacitors ability to provide a surge of current during load transient events will diminish.
Please consider the transient response you need on the output when choosing an output capacitor.

    Thanks,

    - Stephen

  • Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the info. Fortunately the TLV760 has no serious limitation on ESR and capacitor values but that it's almost an exception among popular LDOs. Instead of starting a new thread can you provide similar info on TLV1117, LM1117 and LM1086?

    Regards,

    VS

  • Hi VS,

    Here are the answers:

    TLV1117
ESR requirement is between 0.2 ohms and 10 ohms.

    LM1117
ESR requirement is between 0.3 ohms to 22 ohms.

    LM1086
Unfortunately, the datasheet does not provide a specific value but states that "tantalum" and "aluminum electrolytic" capacitors will stabilize the LDO.  The ESR of these capacitor types are on par with the LM1117 and TLV1117.

    Thanks,

    - Stephen
