LM317: Thermal Overload Protection

Part Number: LM317

Hello,

Regarding to Thermal Overload Protection (TOP) on LM317, my customer is asking some question.

(Question)

1) Do you have a value of TOP? I couldn’t find out it on datasheet.

2) If you don’t have a value, can we refer to a value of LM317A as LM317’s ? (following thread.)

(Once the temperature reaches the threshold(150degC), the thermal shutdown occurs.)

  • HI Tao,

    To answer your questions:

    1. Yes, this was not characterized in these older parts. Typically the thermal shutdown or foldback is around 150C.

    2. All of the LM317's have the same thermal foldback protection scheme in that they fold back the output current based on the die temperature. This is done to protect the device. If you want to have better thermal performance, the LM317-N is the better choice.

    I hope this helps.
