TPS546D24A: Can it stack more than 4 set?

Part Number: TPS546D24A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS53667, TPS53681, TPS53661

Hi PRO:

As title. I know it have good performance such as 2×, 3x, 4× stackable current sharing up to 160 A.

My question, can it stack more than 4 set? 8x or 16x ....

If I want to design a low voltage and high current 320A(or 640A) Power supply with PMBUS. Is TPS546D24A good ideal?

Thanks.

  • Hi Ocean

The TPS546D24A is designed for upto 4x stackability and can support currents of upto 160A. TI offers many multi-channel controllers with external FETs that can support high currents.

For example the TPS53667 can support upto 420A of output current. Can you please let us know what you are powering and the Vin, Vout, Iout requirements and the team will be able to give better suggestions.

    Regards,

    Gerold

The internal digital stacking architecture used in the TPS546D24A does not support stacking more than 4 devices.  As Gerold mentions, for loads requiring more than 4-phases, we would recommend you consider a controller with external power stages.  For these higher phase counts, a separate controller with power-stages will generally have a smaller PCB area and lower BOM cost than stacked integrated FET converters.

The TPS53661, TPS53667, and TPS53681 are all high current, high phase count controllers that use TI's driver + FET "Power Stages" would all be good possible candidates for your application depending on your other power needs in the system.
