BQ24076: The operation of BQ24076

Part Number: BQ24076
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24075-Q1

Hi team,

My customer is designing a charger topology for their automotive application.

They have some question about the bq24076 application as below. Sorry. Not very familiar with charger IC application.

  • How does bq24076 protect battery if the battery is almost full? It seems no I2C interface between battery and charger Ic to let the charger IC off. May we know the basic operating theory about it? Thanks.
  • The customer's new spec is 3A load. Do you have any suggestion solution for their automotive application and is familiar with BQ24076? Their last design is using bq24076 but lower load spec.

Thanks,

  • Hello,

The battery charger uses to BAT pin to get the charge current going into the BAT pin. When the battery voltage gets close to the charger VBATREG or battery regulation voltage, the charge cycle will be in the Constant Voltage mode. At this point, the charger waits till the charge current goes below the termination current threshold. This current is typically 10% of fast charge in some devices like the BQ24076 or adjustable in other devices.

The BQ24079QW as well as the BQ24075-Q1 are automotive grade chargers which can support the 3A load current.
