Lithium Fuel Gauge IC Maximum Capacities

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ27510-G3, BQ27441-G1

Hi,

I've searched the forums as well as a few datasheets and am seeing conflicting information about maximum battery capacity for a few different IC's. The part parametric search shows maximum battery capacity in a dedicated column, though numbers are missing for a few parts:

That said, information doesn't always match up from the table to the datasheet.

For example:

  • For BQ27510-G3, the TI website shows "Battery Capacity (Max) (mAh) as 16000. The only mention of maximum capacity made in the datasheet is in section 8.1, which states that it "...manages an embedded battery (non-removable) or a up to 32000-mAh capacity removable battery pack." Aside from this there is no mention of maximum full capacity that I can find.

  • For BQ27441-G1, the TI website shows "Battery Capacity (Max) (mAh) as 8000. As far as I can find, the datasheet does not mention a maximum capacity anywhere.

What is the actual limiting factor for maximum battery capacity, and which number should be used when looking for accurate maximum battery capacity specs?

  • Hi Jim,

To find the most accurate design capacity data, I would suggest you check the numbers in the Technical Reference Manual for each gauge device.  For example,  in the BQ27441 Technical Reference Manual,  the maximum design capacity is listed as 8000mAh.
