TLV703: ESR

Part Number: TLV703

In section 8.2.2.1 Input and Output Capacitor Requirements recommendation is made to use X5R and X7R type ceramics with >0.1uF effective capacitance for input and output capacitors.

It also states for the output capacitor that the maximum ESR must be < 200mΩ.  That seems really low for an X5R or X7R ceramic if it is the ESR across the entire frequency range.

Could we get some clarification on that maximum ESR number; is that ESR specification across the entire frequency range? And if so is that number correct? And if it is correct could they please provide some suggested parts to achieve this specification.

  • Hi Eddie,

The requirement is accurate and in context, 200 milliohms is an order of magnitude larger than would be expected for a ceramic capacitor.
The value of ESR is at the resonant point where the ESL and capacitance resonate.  It would be the minimum impedance within the manufacturer impedance curve.

    Thanks,
