TPS798-Q1: Short to battery/ground protection

Part Number: TPS798-Q1

hi expert:

does tps79801-q1 has short to battery/ground protection? thanks!

  • HI Lin,

Yes. The outputs voltages absolution maximum rating is 28V:

For short to GND, the device has an internal thermal limit and thermal shutdown.

I hope this answers your question.

  • Hi john

In my application, VIN=13V and VOUT=12V. For short to battery test,

Case1: When 32V is shorted to VOUT, my LDO be damaged nomatter LDO is operating or not. Because 32V exceeds SPEC VOUT MAX.

Case2: When 24V is shorted to VOUT, my LDO be damaged when LDO is operating, my LDO will not be damaged when LDO is off.

    Please correct me and thanks!

  • Hi Lin,

For case one, yes the LDO is likely to be damaged.

For Case two, the LDO will not be damaged as it is below the abs max rating of the device.

    I hope this helps.

  • Hi john

I cannot understand your reply for case2.

When VIN is 13V while my LDO is operating, 24V shorted to VOUT will cause a reverse current flowing from VOUT to VIN. Since my LDO is PNP structure, I think current from collector to emitter direction will damage PNP and should not be allowed. Please correct me!

  • Hi Lin,

Sorry I was not clearer. The datasheet has the following:

Meaning the internal structure has protection to ensure that the reverse voltages across the device are not going to damage the device. The maximum leakage should be less the 0.6mA. This device has inherent reverse battery protection so as long as the VOUT to GND voltage does not exceed the absolute maximum rating, the device will not be damaged.

    Does this help to clarify?
