UCC21710-Q1: Current protection with OC pin: DESAT and SHUNT method combining

Part Number: UCC21710-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC21710, UCC21750

Hello,

I'm using the UCC21710 as a gate driver. I read in its datasheet the following statement on page 29, chapter 8.3.7:

"The overcurrent and short circuit protection feature can also be paired with desaturation circuit and shunt
resistors."

Does it mean that I can connect to the pin OC both the desat circuit and the shunt voltage at the same time and the system works as wired OR, so the first protection circuit that detects the 0.7V threshold activates the current protection?

I also looked at the EVM UCC21732QDWEVM-025 where both methods are implemented, but it is explicitly stated that they can be used in an exclusive way.

Which one is the truth?

Thank you.

  • Stefano,

it's one or the other. You can implement an OC detection /or/ DESAT detection, but not both at the same time on the same driver. But if you want to implement DESAT on one driver and OC on other driver of course it could be done.

OC pin has the advantage of being able to tune the DESAT threshold by resistor ladder, whereas DESAT pin (in ucc21750 is fixed 9V, and can only be increased in steps of the HV blocking diode forward voltage)

This should say "or" to avoid confusion.
