TPS2513: It doesn't do fast charging.

Part Number: TPS2513
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS564201

Hello,

I've been working with TPS2513 for new chargers and it does charge but only at 1A each port, checking DP and DM data lines are at 0.7~1.2V each(depending the smartphones tested)...Voltage level is at 5.07V using step-down converter TPS564201. I share schematic. I also have been checking all forum with same questions and it isn't clear what can be the problem, I level up the input voltage also at 5.25 with an external power supply directly to USB connectors and still no change in DP and DM lines to do USB fast charger divider at 2.7V and 2.0V.

I also use a current-limiting power-distribution switch NCP383 dual output.

The tests have been made with several devices: Apple Iphone XR, Apple Ipad 2019, HTC10, Sony XPERIA, Sony M4 Aqua, Huawei Y9s.

Let me know if I'm missing anything or should there be a new device that replaces TPS2513...

  • Hello,

Your schematic looks correct. The TPS2513 will change the type of advertisement it will do depending on the device connected. This is explained in section 8.3.5 of the datasheet. The portable devices connected to the TPS2513 must not be presenting themselves as Divider mode compatible devices which is why it is not advertising these modes.

  • Hello

So if it is correct schematic, then which devices shall charge currents beyond 1.5A with the TPS2513?

I tested original Iphone charger, going to 4.96V@1.93A, D+: 2.7V, D-:2V. Look photo:

I tried the same with my design, and this were results: Voltages in D+: 0.7V and D-: 0.7V. Battery from phone was 5-20% (tested several times). Also with Ipad.

What shall be the best recommendation from you, the previous answer wasn't clear for me and my team.

    Thanks,

    Héctor.

  • Hello, I'm also interested on the reply of this topic.

  • Hello,

What I am saying is that the TPS2513 is capable of proprietary charging modes (Divider, 1.2V modes) that advertise current capabilities greater than 1.5A of current. However, the devices that you are connecting ( Apple Iphone XR, Apple Ipad 2019, HTC10, Sony XPERIA, Sony M4 Aqua, Huawei Y9s) are newer devices and may not be presenting themselves as devices capable of the charging modes that charge at currents greater than 1.5A.

These proprietary charging modes are very old so the newer phones and portable devices may not be incorporating them into their newer designs. If the portable device connected to the TPS2513 does not present itself as a device capable of a proprietary charging scheme, the TPS2513 will not advertise it

  • Hello Adam,

That's a shame, so with that saying, the TPS2513 shall be not suitable for new devices.

Do you have a newer product of TI that can meet our requirements?

    Thanks,

    Hector.

  • Hi Hector,

I am saying that the TPS2513 will not advertise proprietary charging schemes to portable devices that it does not detect as being compatible with proprietary charging schemes. If new phones stop advertising the capability of charging from proprietary charging schemes, then the TPS2513 will not advertise a proprietary charging scheme to it.
