LM5101A: Maximum rating current of HO/LO terminals

Part Number: LM5101A

Hello team,

Most gate driver products have peak current rating specifications (DC and pulse) in the Absolute Maximum Ratings table.
However, this product does not specify the maximum peak current of the output terminal (HO-3 terminal) and LO-8 terminal) as the maximum rating.

Please tell me the maximum current rating of the output terminal of this product. Or how can you think about it?

Regards,
H.Someno

  • Hello Hidekazu,

The gate driver when driving the MOSFET gate charge will have peak currents of a small pulse duration that exists during the Vgs rise and fall times. The duty cycle of the gate drive current is very small. The driver output devices are inherently current limited due to the internal drive voltage and output devices Rdson. The gate driver will self limit the current in a pulse current application. The average current rating is a thermal limitation which is why there is an average maximum current rating.

Confirm if this addresses your question or you can post additional questions on this thread.

    Regards,

  • Thanks for your reply.

    I have some additional questions.

    1. What is the "average maximum current rating" described in your reply?  And, How much is that current?

    2. What is the difference BTW  " 3A_typ specified as peak pullup/pulldown current" in datasheet and the "average maximum current rating"?

    Regards,

    H.Someno

  • Hello Hidekazu,

After review of the datasheet, I see that the average current of the LO and LO is not in the parameter tables. There are some drivers which have this rating and others that do not.

Can you comment on the average current that is of interest in the application you are inquiring? If you can provide the switching frequency and gate charge of the MOSFETs I can comment on the average current to see if there is any concern and if the device has test conditions covering your application.

    Regards,

  • Richard-san,

First, I'll talk to my customer with your information about the maximum peak current ratings so far.
After that, In case I have any additional questions from customer, please allow me to contact you directly by an another email.

    Regards,

  • Hello Hidekazu-san,

Yes, you can contact me through email regarding questions from the customer, once you get more details about the application.
