TPS22976: urgent support need for TPS22976

Part Number: TPS22976
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2HB16-Q1, TPS22990, TPS22959

Hi team,

we have urgent support needs below.

My customer has a new requirement below.

3.3V input, dual channel current limit port protection ( 5A per channel) device.

MPS has promoted the MP5092 to them. We only can promote the TPS22976 to them.

But we still have below questions want to check with you.

1. What's the difference between the load switch and efuse?

2. TPS22976 max current is 6A, whether the device has current limit feature internal the device? if yes, what''s the current limit threshold?

3.If the customer need current foldback Ios feature to improve the short circuit protection, do we have some recommended devices?

4.We need the device has current limit feature( current limit threshold setting feature is optional). Do you have some recommended devices?

Many thanks.

  • Hi Frank,

An eFuse and Load Switch are not interchangable. I highly recommend taking a look at Table 1 in this guide as it describes the various features of our Power Switch offerings: https://www.ti.com/lit/wp/slyy168/slyy168.pdf

eFuses are used for input power protection while load switches are mainly to be used for power distribution. TPS22976 does not have any integrated current limiting feature.

Since you want a two channel, current limited switch, would a High Side Switch be of help in this situation? What protection methodology are you looking for exactly? Do you want the switch to hold the current at a fixed value or turn off as soon as the fault is triggered?

Please take a look at the following device as a potential option: TPS2HB16-Q1

You can find our High Side Switch Portfolio here: https://www.ti.com/power-management/power-switches/high-side-switches/products.html

  • hi Shreyas,

hold the current at a fixed value is better. Do we have solutions for input 3v3, current ability and current limit>5A requirement? MP5092 is a good solution, do we have some solution here?

BTW: if the load switch doesn't have the current limit feature, why we mentioned the max current ability of the device is 6A?

    Thanks.

  • Hi Frank,

At this time we do not have a current limiting load switch solution for greater than 5A at 3.3V. Our load switches do have controlled turn on which limits capacitive inrush. We spec the max current ability of the device because if the device is used at currents higher than the spec'd amount, it will get damaged. This denotes the maximum nominal DC current but does refer to current limiting.

We do offer high current load switches like TPS22959 and TPS22990 but these do not have integrated current limiting.
