BQ24075: Li-ion charger combined with TPS61090 5V boost stage

Part Number: BQ24075
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61090

I am designing a device that requires a 5V DC input source and want to provide a 3.7V li-ion battery for backup only. I want to use the BQ24075 for power path management and battery charging, but need a stable 5V output also when running off the battery. Is the design choice to combine it with the TPS61090 boost stage a common/recommended combination with the BQ24075? The load will never draw more than 2A peak, and mostly <1A.

  • Hello Dolf,

    Yes that's a good solution.

What is the boost converter used to power?

  • During initial prototypes I am integrating an orange pi zero in my board with a lorawan module. I tested power consumption and it generally consumes 0.6-0.8A at 5V. I couldn't detect peaks >1A even during startup or RF transmission. They may be there but then they're really short. So the 2A switch of the boost converter should be fine since the charger can supply much more by combining the Vin with Vbat.
