SM74611: Can we use it as reverse input protection?

Part Number: SM74611
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM74700-Q1

We need to implement a reverse input protection in a 24V system, can we use the SM74611?

Can we put it on the negative line (in Vin-)?

In this configuration, would it avoid to discharge the capacitor (which is located after the diode) to the input?

  • Hello Marina,

For reverse input protection and mainly preventing the hold up capacitor from discharging, we recommend to use our ideal diode controller LM74700-Q1.

SM74611 can work upto 30V of reverse voltage (24V would have less margin), but the reverse turn off delay is not very quick compared to LM74700-Q1.

Further LM74700-Q1 has -60V to 65V operating range, making it suitable for 24V reverse polarity proteciton.

For reverse polarity protection and more information about ideal diode controllers, request you to refer to the white paper and application note.

Chapter 5 of the white paper "www.ti.com/.../slyy168" discusses about reverse polarity protection in detail.

Application note on ideal diode controllers "https://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/slvae57".

    Regards,

    Kari.

  • Hello Marina,

Let us know if you were able to look at the response above and if you have more questions or clarification on using LM74700-Q1 for reverse polarity protection.

Note that LM74700-Q1 is mainly for high-side reverse polarity protection.

    Regards,

    Kari.
