UCC29910A: UCC29910A Power Rating

Part Number: UCC29910A

Hi sir,
if I upgrade the rating of the external components like MOSFET and etc, can I use UCC29910A for more than 1KW power rating, or still only able to use for less than 130w power rating?

  • Hello,

I found a e2e thread discusses this very topic.  You can find it at the following link.  I think you might find this information useful.

  • Hi mike,

Based on the discussed topic above, I want to confirm, is that PFC Buck (UCC29910A) possible to use if the input voltage is single-phase 240V, the problem is just about the robustness ? he suggests using PFC boost because it is more robust.
if it is true, I want to ask, what causes the PFC buck to be less robust?

to make sure, I attach my scheme on picture below. please give me your response, is PFC buck (UCC29910A) possible to apply in my scheme ?

    regards and thanks

  • Hello,

I have not designed a PFC buck I am familiar with the topology and have designed many PFC pre-regulators.  I had sent you that link so maybe the engineers on the thread could give you insight into why they did not think it was as robust.

What I do know about buck PFC is the input has discontinues input which results in higher THD and lower power factor.  In low power applications buck PFC and flyback PFC have become popular.  However there is a cost.  The output capacitors have to suppress the   2X line frequency current so the output capacitance required is much much greater than if you used a two stage solution. Do this these typologies are generally used in less than 200 W applications.

When it comes to robustness, I am not sure why you could not design a buck PFC as robust as a boost PFC.  However, at your power level I would recommend a two stage solution with a PFC boost and a step down down converter.
