LMC7660: Ceramic capacitor

Part Number: LMC7660

Hello,

My customer is using the LMC7660 and wants to know if ceramic capacitors are allowed?  The datasheet only mentions electrolytic caps.

If only electrolytic capacitors are allowed, then what are the requirements for them (ESR, capacitance, etc)?

Thanks!
Jatan

  • Hi Jatan,

Thank you for posting.  Our expert is ooo this week so you may get a confirmation next week. To be safe, I would stay with the electrolytic.  Since the ESR also affect the output ripple, you may limit the capacitor ESR such that it would not produce excessive ripple voltage.

    Thanks,

  • Hello Jatan,

In general using ceramic capacitors is the better choice when working with charge pumps to minimize parasitic over- and undershoots. I think the datasheet only mentions electrolytic capacitors because in 1997 when the device was released there have not been any ceramic capacitors with such a high capacitance.

    Best regards,
    Brigitte
