UCC28880: HV Buck Topology

Part Number: UCC28880
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28C45

Is UCC28880 able to support below condition with Buck topoloty? or what solution is suitable? Very thanks.

 1.Vin=350~900V

2.Vout=350V/5%

3.Iout(0~1.7A)

Application: AC Drive

  • Hello,

    The UCC28880 is recommended for 100mA of output current.  It is not recommended for 1.7A of output current.

    TI does not presently offer a buck controller with an internal FET than can handle 1.7A of output current for high voltage applications, such as yours.

    The other issue you will have is if your input is equal to your output in a buck converter you will require a 100% duty cycle, which will saturate your buck inductor and if you should have step on the input voltage from 350V to 900V you will turn on the high side FET into a saturated inductor.

    Because your input voltage is so high it would be better to use a two switch forwarded with a maximum duty cycle of 50%.

    TI has a power stage designer software tool that will help you design the power stage.  You can download it from the following link. www.ti.com/.../POWERSTAGE-DESIGNER STAGE DESIGNER&tisearch=Search-EN-everything

    The UCC28C45 is a peak current mode controller that has a maximum duty cycle of 50% and should work well with this application.

    If you should chose to design the UCC28C45 in a two switch forwarded for your application, please re-post in the e2e with UCC28C45 in the title so the appropriate applications engineer can answer your questions, in regards to your design.

    Regards,
