Hi,

I need to design a 12V lead acid battery charger with the capable to change with the current of 3A.

As the main supply from a AC to DC is only 13.8V, I believe we will need to add a boost converter to allow the charger to be charged to 15.6V (or 14.4V?).

Efficiency is critical as the charger is required to meet the California Energy Commission (CEC) Battery Charger system or the BC mark.

Hi San Lee,

You're correct, you'll need a boost converter to boost up the input voltage to charge this lead acid battery. You can use BQ24610 followed by a boost converter to charge the battery.

Please refer to 10.2.3 section of BQ24610 Datasheet.

How does BQ24610 compare to BQ24725A?

Are both the evaluation board able to be use with Lead acid charging?

Hi San Lee,

The BQ24610 is a standalone charger (configured using external resistors and capacitors) and BQ24725A is a host controlled charger (the host programs the charging features via I2C).

The BQ24610 evaluation board should be able to use for lead acid following the direction in the Datasheet, with BQ24725A, you'd be responsible to program the charging profile.
