TLV760: External diode

Hi team,

My customer is considering to use the TLV760.

The output capacitor customer connects is maximum 3uF. The customer is currently connecting a diode between output and input to discharge output capacitor to input rail for when input is suddenly disappeared. However, customer would like to remove this diode if it is no problem. I think they can remove this diode because the output cap is only 3uF(max), and the MOSFET body diode should be able to endure the current. Is my understanding correct?

Hi Takashi-san,

Yes, 3uF does not generate a lot of current through the body diode when the Vin is suddenly removed. However, we don't have quantitative data to show how much current the body diode can safely discharge and because of this, if the application anticipates the output could be higher than the input, we would advise keeping the protected diode to prevent the output voltage being higher than the input by 0.3V.
