BQ2000T: Charger IC sees battery and acts as if a charger is plugged in

Part Number: BQ2000T

Hello,

We have based our bq2000T design on the attached reference schematic.  I've also attached an image of our schematic.  The problem we're seeing is that charger turns on the LED (/LED low) even when there is no external charger plugged in.  I believe that what's happening is that the battery voltage, minus the drop of the diode inside the switching FET, appears on VCC of the bq2000T and the bq2000T thinks there's a charger attached.  I've since seen other reference schematics which include a blocking diode between incoming power and the switching FET, with VCC on the anode side of the diode.  For the attached schematic, is there any way to prevent this behavior, or is adding the blocking diode the only option?

Thanks,
Scott
