BQ4050EVM-561: Do I have to run a full learning cycle every time I plug in a new cell ?

Part Number: BQ4050EVM-561
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50, BQ4050, BQ40Z50-R2

Hello TI experts,

I have successfully run learning cycle with max error 1% for 18650 cells. My update status is 0e. I have following questions. I look for answers for both the questions. Big thanks in advance.

1) How do I proceed now ? I have learnt from the Forum that I need to make a Golden image .ggcsv file. Can you please proceed for the steps I need to follow for this?

2) Is it possible that I remove the cell with which I ran the learning cycle and plug-in a new or old cell with same chemistry instead and get information about the cell's SOH/SOC/Impedances ? If yes, how do I proceed for this ? Do I have to run complete learning cycles on all the cells again and again or just one cycle or just discharge/charge ? Is this a time-taking process as I see it or can be shortened?

Please help. Please try to not reply with only reference to TRM of BQ40Z50. Any explanation will be helpful.

Regards,

Moonmoon

  • Hello Moonmoon,

I believe the part number linked may be incorrect, the bq4050 is a CEDV gauge.

We recommend running a learning cycle on one of the packs and then do a calibration for all packs in production (or take average of a few calibration values). You would upload the golden image to configure all your parameters for a new battery pack then cycle the pack to fully update the gauge.

There are some videos on ti.com that you can follow for more information on going to production along with the app notes on the part page for the BQ40Z50. The steps for production start around 25min and will go into detail for what you need to do for production.

  • Hello Wyatt,

    Thanks for the reply.

    I will try them.
