BQ25887: Disable automatic IBAT_DISCHG feature

Part Number: BQ25887
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25790

Hello,

We are using BQ25887 in out application. Also, we using battery protection chip , that cut out battery discharge FET, an will reset itself only when the charging process start.

I found in datasheet that BQ25887, before charging process, will detect the presence of battery by discharging it with 10mA current. But in this case the protection chip can't pass the current, because of the active protection. Can this feature of BQ25887 be disabled?

Thanks.

  • Ivan,

It is not possible to disable the automatic IBAT_DISCHG feature. Maybe you could keep charging disabled in software, pull a small current from system to close the protection FETs, and finally enable charging once the protection FETs have closed.

I strongly suggest ordering an EVM and trying this out with your specific battery pack and protection circuit.

I hope this resolves your issue,

    Ricardo

  • Ricardo,

Thanks a lot for the fast answer. So I have another two small questions, related to this issue:

    1. All of the TI chargers have this function? Or this is individual to every charger?

    2. Can you suggest a charger, with closest parameters to the BQ25887, that can start charge of batteries without checking it? With the search on website, I found about 20 pcs with little differences. Key features that I need - charge from 5V, 2-cell, standalone with I2C interface, charging current up to 2A.

    Best regards,

    Ivan

  • Ivan,

What about BQ25790? It has buck-boost capability and it does not perform the battery discharge automatically.

I hope this resolves your issue,

    Ricardo
