Hello, I am looking for help with device selection. Essentially what I am trying to create is a USB-C PD Hub (2 Ports) that has two batteries connected to it. The batteries run independent of each other at separate times so they are hot swap-able. I am currently using two 3 cell Lithium packs with the BQ4050 for a gas gauge. I have two BQ25710 battery chargers and a TPS65988 Dual Port USB-C. I need to be able to charge the batteries from the USB-C ports or power the ports from the battery and pass the data or video through to a controller. I have been looking at the USB-C Power Delivery Mini Dock (TIDA-01243) reference design. The controller will have one USB-C PD port to take power and information from my power module. I am wondering if the Mini Dock is the best reference or there is a better way to navigate this design. Thank you

    Hello,

    What are your power requirements, specifically how much voltage and current will you want to source and sink? The TPS65988 has internal high voltage source and sink paths, while the TPS65994 has an internal 5 V source path with an external high voltage sink path.

    Hi,

    I am hoping to use the full range of USB 3.2 protocol so 20V @ 5A would be the high end. I plan to provide 6.5A as the most current I would need to pull from the battery at any time so it would be divided between the ports. I am wondering about the best way to direct communication and power between more than two ports.

    Hello,

    There are two options for you. The first is the TPS65988 which has two paths that can support 20 V 5 A in both directions internally. The second option is the TPS65994AD. This part can source two 5 V 3 A paths internally and sink two 5 A with 20 V paths externally.

    Based upon your requirement, the TPS65994AD will not be able to charge at the full 20 V 5 A so I would recommend the TPS65988. A good starting place would be the TPS65988EVM.
