BQ25120: reference design

Part Number: BQ25120
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PMP11311, TIDA-00712,

Hi sir,

I see that TIDA-00712 and PMP11311 are similar with TIDA-00712 having the addition of a fuel gauge and a protection IC.

I would like to know what benefits are provided from adding the fuel gauge and protection IC.

My understanding was that the BQ25120 did both battery monitoring (% based) and battery protection.

Why is it not redundant?

Does the bq25120 not perform both of those functions already?

Through i2c you can get the state of charge and control the current and voltage operating zones of the battery.

I’m confused on why the fuel gauge and protection ic are necessary.

Thanks.

  • Hello,

The BQ25120 provide a crude 5 bit voltage monitor status which is based on the battery voltage.

The addition of the gouge gives a much more accurate SOC with the addition of the fuel gauge for applications that require more accurate measurements using the ADC present in the gauge.
