TPS25980: IEC62368 standard as safety interlock

Part Number: TPS25980
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2663

Hi,

I would like to introduce inrush controller in my board:

24V
4A nom
xxA limit
to be considered EN62368-1 (security Information technology) and "single fault" tests.
For example TPS25980 is referred to as "IEC62368 CB ready"; I have a currency machine with DC motor and opening door with micro-switch.
The micro-switch, certified according to certain standards (therefore definable as safety interlock), should control (via enable) TPS25980.
Everything should be "single fault" proof as stated in the aforementioned rule.

Do you think TPS25980 can be a good p/n here or do you have any other suggestions?

Many Thanks,

Antonio

  • Hi Antonio,

The Max recommended operating voltage of TPS25980 is only 24V. Since your nominal operating voltage is 24V, TPS25980 may not be a very good choice.

Please consider using TPS2663. This device is also IEC 62368-1 Certified.

  • Hi Praveen,

    Thank you,

ok for the greater margin on the power supply.
However, I would like to understand better with you the aspect of IEC 63268-1 certification.
What exactly does it mean that it is a "certified" single fault proof device that is comparable to a fuse?
I would like to use this type of iIC with an interlock (certified switch) which, in the event of a door opening, interrupts the power supply (via the ENABLE pin and makes for example non-dangerous moving parts, ie motors as they are not powered. ..).
It is a question that also concerns specific aspects of the aforementioned standard but useful for better understanding the fields of application of these inrush limiters with ENABLE.

Please write me in private if needed: a-faggio
    Thank you,

    Antonio

  • Hi Antonio,

The single point failure protection of TPS25980 mentioned in datasheet is regarding the current limit functionality of the IC. The device still limits current even when the ILIM pin is OPEN or SHORTED.

Do let us know if you have any question regarding the protection feature of the IC.
