LM1086: Is there a negative equivalent?

Part Number: LM1086
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM79, TPS7A33, TPS7A47, LM337

I've built many +15v power supplies for audio related components using the LM1086 and I would like to build a supply/regulator that has both + and - 15v rails. Is there a negative equivalent for the LM1086? I would like to keep my basic design and just adapt it to a negative rail. Thanks.

  • Robert,

The closest options we have from a negative equivalent of the LM1086 would be the LM79 for fixed outputs or the LM337 if an adjustable output is desired. We also offer solutions that offer much better sensitive analog performance for audio related components (like the TPS7A47 and TPS7A33), but these are more high performance solutions than the LM1086.

Let me know if either the LM79 or LM337 is a good candidate here.

  • Thanks for the reply Blake. The LM337 may work for me at the moment. I have looked at the TPS7Axx and the specs look great, they would be perfect for my application were it not for the QFN package. I'm just small potatoes, we hand solder the boards in the items we sell and I sell a few circuit boards to the DIY folks.

That being said, If I wanted to invest in having some assembled boards manufactured for testing for my power supplies using the TPS7A regulators is there a company you can recommend? The ability to do smaller batches affordably is one of the main concerns of course. I've investigated this issue before and looked at JLCPCB in China, they source parts from LCSC Electronics. They have your components but my concern is whether they are authentic or not. Can you speak to this as well? Thank you.

  • Robert,

Unfortunately we cannot provide any specific recommendations for board manufacturing or assembly. At TI we have an approved vendor list we use to build our own evaluation modules and reference designs, but this list changes and can vary based on the type of board we’re manufacturing and the quantity of boards we plan to build.

Regarding JLCPCB in China I’m unfamiliar with them as a PCB manufacturer, but I have heard of LCSC Electronics. TI strongly encourages our customers to purchase all TI semiconductor products through TI’s authorized sources: either directly from TI or through a TI-authorized distributor. You can view TI’s anti-counterfeit policy (see link below) for further information regarding the validity of our components.
