BQ24610: Supply current by battery regardless of connection of AC power supply

Part Number: BQ24610
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24800,

Hello Exptert.

I'm considering BQ24610 and BQ24800.
Then I have question for above devices.

I'd like to supply current for load regardless of connection of AC power supply due to minimizing the size of AC adapter.
In other word, AC adapter's power is supplying only for battery charging.

I think BQ24610 can achieve above behavior by input current limit and system power selector feature.
Also, BQ24800 can achieve this by Hybrid power boost feature.
But I don't have confidence for above assumption.

So could you tell me your opinion about whether both device can achieve expected behavior?

I'm looking forward to hearing back from you.

  • Hi Kazuki,

In your design, you will have an adapter, your battery and an external system load? However the adaptor is incapable of providing both charge current and system load?

This is not good design implementation. BQ24610 has input current limit feature, but it will prioritize system load over charge current. So if input current limit is hit, then charge current will be reduced to supply SYS load, however BQ24610 cannot support supplement mode, which is when the battery and adapter both supply system load.

BQ24800 hybrid boost feature is active when input current exceeds the input current limit, but you are not intended to remain in this mode for constant operation. This is because the battery will continuously discharge to supplement the system load.

  • Hi Kedar,

Thank you for your prompt reply.
I understood that BQ24610 cannot turn on AC FET and BATFET simultaneously.
As for BQ24800 can support this but you don't recommend due to cause the discharging Battert.

  • Hi Kazuki,

In hybrid boost, the battery will discharge to also supply the system load. If you have a constant case where both adapter and battery are required to support the system load, then your battery will never charge, and will just discharge. BQ24800 hybrid boost mode is to supply peak system load (generally in notebook applications where CPU peak power can exceed input supply current for shot periods of time).
