TPS2557: MFI Overcurrent Protection Requirements

Part Number: TPS2557
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2543,

For a number of years, we have used the TPS2557 and TPS2543 in multiple products that connect to Apple iOS devices. Recently Apple changed their overcurrent requirements, and we are now having difficulty passing the MFI overcurrent test.

We have read the app note SLVAEQ2–April 2020 “How to Pass MFI Overcurrent Protection…”.

While we can use method 1 in the app note to pass the MFI test for our current product using the TPS2557, we don’t view it is a good long term solution, because it requires raising the overcurrent limit higher than is desired. Also, in order to use that method for the TPS2543, the current limit has to be set higher than the maximum recommended continuous current (2.5A).

- Can we use method 2,  “paralleling RC with Rlimit to delay the current limit response”, on the TPS2557 and/or TPS2543?

- Are there comparable devices available which are designed to satisfy the MFI overcurrent requirements?

Thanks!

  • Hi  Miller,

Our expect who takes over MFI support will reply it tomorrow.

  • Hi David,

    For TPS2557, you can't use method 2.

For TPS2543, I am not sure about that.

You can create a new thread with the device name TPS2543.
