BQ25306: Protecting BQ25306 and dual cell LiFePo4

Part Number: BQ25306

Hello,

The context:

I'm working on a project that needs to include a charger for two LiFePo4 battery cells in series. I'm planning to use BQ25306 for this purpose. The device will use two Cylindrical standard size (18650 or above) battery cells. and the batteries need to be replaceable by the user of the device. The batteries holder will be located off board. A thermistor will be used to measure the temperature between the two cells. A battery gauge will be placed between the BQ25306 and the battery.

My questions:

  1. As the batteries are replaceable by the end user, I cannot prevent situations where they will be inserted incorrectly / shorted. How can I protect the BQ25306 and the gauge from reverse polartiy and shorts while allowing the battery to be charged ?
  2. As the thermistor will be located offboard, I guess that there a risk of ESD at the connector. Should I use a TVS diode in order to protect the TS pin of the BQ25306 and if yes how should I chose it (maximum rating of the TS pin is 5.5V)

Thank you in advance for your help !

Michel
