LM317: MIL-STD-461 CS106

Part Number: LM317

The LM317EMP has an ESD voltage rating of 3000V. The MIL-STD-461 CS106 test is approximately a 400V sinx/x for 5usec. The human body model decays quickly in under 500nsec. The CS106 at 5usec has >10x Joules the Human Body model. Do I need to include some sort of suppression device or will the LM317EMP withstand the test?

Hi Mark,

I've designed to CS106 and I would not rely on the HBM information to protect the LM317. I would add some sort of suppression as you said to remove the susceptibility of the LDO to the CS106 event.

Thanks. I've selected an appropriate varistor that's up to the task.

My situation is somewhat worse in that an earlier revision of MIL-STD-461 is being imposed, specifically CS06 where the transient is 10usec, as opposed to 5usec wide. The voltage is lower, but the energy is higher.
