TPS2113A: Recommendation to connect two TPS2113A switches in parallel ideally or does exist alternative switch with higher current?

Part Number: TPS2113A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2121

Dear Sir or Madam,

my question regards to set two TPS2113A in parallel to get a higher current delivery. Unfortunately I cannot find an alternative switch with the same conditions but with a higher current of approx. ~3.5A.

I want to use the VSNS comparator to decide the switching process through different input voltage levels. But if two switches are working parallel there are two comparators which has to be feed with one resistor divider. I guess through the tolerances the switching process will not work synchron. Correct?

Do you have some experiences to interconnect parallel two TPS2113A with a optimal synchronisation? Can you give some advices/recommendations?

Of course I am open for an alternative switch but I cannot find an identical one with a higher current delivery.

Thank you very much beforehand.

Best regards

Wolfgang Walter

  • Hi Wolfgang,

We usually do not recommend connecting PowerMUXes in parallel due to the device to device variation that could cause one unit to switch before the other.

Would a device like TPS2121 be beneficial for your system instead?

Thank you for choosing TI Power MUX in your designs.

  • Hi Shreyas Dmello,

thanks for the fast reply. I found this alternative part also.

What I can see on the first view this one has no enable function like the TPS2113A. But perhaps our desired controlling implementation can be transferred through the other functions.

    I will check that again.

  • Hi Wolfgang,

While the device has no EN pin, it is possible to artificially trigger the OV1 and OV2 pins with an external source.

When both OVx pins are higher than the reference voltage (1.06V) the output of TPS2121 will be High - Z. Is such a setup acceptable?

  • Hi Shreyas Dmello,

I need the switching conditions between both inputs through defined voltage levels and the enable function parallel. The switch will be a part of a complex wakeup logic. If it does not fit perfectly maybe I can solve the issue with a separate comparator. But I have to check the switch more intensive. I will arrange time between the years to study the switch better.

I thank you for your efforts.

    Best regards

  • Hi Wolfgang,

I hope you have a wonderful holiday season. Please feel free to create a new thread when ready and we will try to support you in any way we can.

If you would like, another option is to get in contact with us directly through your TI Sales Rep and we can go over schematics if you would like to keep those off a public forum.

For now, I will close out this thread.

Thank you for choosing TI Power Switches in your designs.

  • Hello Shreyas Dmello,

many thanks, I wish you also nice holidays.

Only to inform you. We will take the TPS2121. It is conform with our spedification and further logic. Thanks your advice I will abuse the overvoltage function as an enable pin. It was a good idea.

    Best regards
