TPS37A-Q1: Why the creepage specification?

Part Number: TPS37A-Q1

Why an automotive rated part should comply to the 60664 creepage specification? Nominal working voltage should be 42V in the worst case, so as a SELV, it shouldn't be influenced by clearance/creepage (which usually come in play after 50V). Is this some automotive standard or it's because the inputs are rated 65V? The typical application circuits in page 1 also shows suppression diodes, these should be clamp the voltage to a safe level. Is it that 42V systems have a nominal variation that could go over 50V? Thanks in advance
  • Hi Lorenzo,

The TPS37A-Q1 has a rated voltage input of 65V and can be used in 12 V and 24 V automotive systems.  During a load dump event, the system voltage can spike as high as 60V for a 24 V automotive system, hence the need to comply with the 60664 creepage spec.  I hope I have answered your question.
