LM73606: overvoltage protection

Part Number: LM73606
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM73605

Hi team,

Could you give any comments on the concern as below?

Customer wants to understand how LM73606/5 will work when two cases as below happen. Especially, they are worried about the output voltage can rise when the case happens and the device can be broken due to the overvoltage. And they also want to understand how to prevent the overvoltage.

- The load changes from the full load to no load.

- The load is no load and the device is disabled.

  • Hi Noriyuki,

      1.  If your customer wants LM73605/6 load transients performance, they can refer to LM73605/6 datasheet Figure.69-Figure.72.  Under the test condition in datasheet, the load transient from 6A to 10mA will bring around +250mV voltage peak, which is very normal and won't broken the device itself. Your customer can check whether the performance is acceptable by their circuit. They can choose a suitable inductance/output capacitor and optimize the loop to have a better load transient performance.

      2.   If  LM73605/6 is disabled, the internal High side MOSFET would not turn on any more. The output voltage might decrease very slow, but it wouldn't bring the overvoltage.

Did your customer have any problem on their demo board? Do they use AUTO mode or FPWM mode? I may not understand your question very well. Please let me know if I misunderstood your question.

  • Victor,

They used competitor devices before and had over voltage issues that happened in cases as I mentioned.

That's why they ask us whether similar issues can happen.

If you have not heard, it's OK. I will discuss again with customer.

  • Hi Noriyuki,

Our devices work well.  If it is needed, We can check customers' design details  to ensure everything is fine.
