TPS62175: overvoltage protection

Part Number: TPS62175

Hi team,

Could you give any comments on the concern as below?

Customer wants to understand how TPS62175 will work when two cases as below happen. Especially, they are worried about the output voltage can rise when the case happens and the device can be broken due to the overvoltage. And they also want to understand how to prevent the overvoltage.

- The load changes from the full load to no load.

- The load is no load and the device is disabled.

Regards,

Noriyuki Takahashi

  • Noriyuki,

For the "No load to device disabled" conditions there are two methods to prevent output over-voltage:

    1. There is a 175 Om Output discharge resistor that is activated when EN=Low
    2. As the PG pin is also pulled low when EN=low, connecting a resistor between PG and VOut will provide another path for the output voltage to be discharged when the device is disabled.

For "load changes from full to light load", there will always be some amount of output voltage overshoot (see figure 36 in datasheet), but the primary purpose of the TPS62175's DCS control topology is to respond quickly to load transient conditions and prevent excessive output voltage over or undershoot.

In general, the load transient response can be optimized through the sizing of the output LC filter (Please see the  SLVA543 app note (here) for more information).

Note: The fastest load transients response can be achieved with smaller L and C values, but the trade off is that the output volatile ripple will increase as the LC values are reduced.

    Sincerely,

    -Matt
