TPS62750: Is this chip suitable for Multi-Chemistry battery charging?

Hello,

For a project I am working on at the moment, I am looking for a Multi-Chemistry compatible battery charging solution. In other words, I am looking for a battery charger where the output voltage and current can be configured by resistor values. For safety reasons, SMBus / I2C etc is not an option.

The input is a 5V, 500mA max USB connection.

The output charging voltages are: 4.2 V, 3.8V. 3.65V, 2.7V. The charging current should be limited at a value (depending on the configured battery chemistry) somewhere below 500mA.

I have seen the EVM of this product. However, in my design there is no space for such a big capacitor. Also, for obvious reasons, I do not want the output to be discharged.

Do you think this chip is suitable for this type of application?

    thank you for your question and sorry for the late answer.

    I wouldn't advise you to use TPS62750 for your application, since it is not optimized for battery management.

    Have you already taken a look to the Battery management ICs section of TI portfolio?

    Yes I have been searching for Battery Charger IC's from the TI portfolio. I couldn't find one that was suitable with charging a variety of different battery chemistries. Assuming that charging a battery would only require an adjustable output voltage and a way to restrain charging current, I came down to this Buck converter. 

    Could you maybe help me find one that is suitable for my application? In my opinion, I don't think the kind of charger I am looking for is very special. However it seems hard to find.

  • Hi Felix,

    Most battery chargers are designed for Li type batteries that use CC/CV profile. For different Li batteries with different termination voltages, you will need a charger with adjustable output.  For NiMH charged at currents < 0.5C, you can terminate with safety timer timeout. I recommend BQ24105.

    For NiMH charging at > 0.5C, it is recommended to terminate with -dV/dt and/or dT/dt.  The only standalone with this profile is BQ2000 family.
