BQ25790: BQ25790 to charge LiFePO4 battery?

Part Number: BQ25790

Hi, TI Application Team,

We'd like to use a BQ charger to charge 2S LiFePO4. BQ25790 looks promising.

The product table on TI website says it is good for "Li-Ion/Li-Polymer, Lithium Phosphate/LiFePO4", while the datasheet explicitly mentioned "for 1-4 cell Li-ion battery and Lipolymer battery" but no mentioning "Lithium Phosphate/LiFePO4".

how to make it suitable for charging "Lithium Phosphate/LiFePO4"?

Thanks

Don

  • Hi Don,

The default settings are all for LiIon/Polymer.  To configure for LIFePO4, I recommend the following:

    1.  Use the PROG pin to set the default 1-4s as close as possible to the LiFePO4 regulation voltage.

    2.  Powering up with charge disabled

    3.  Host writes to the I2C registers for battery regulation, minimum system voltage and recharge threshold for LiFePO4

    4.  Host sets charge current, termination and precharge current as well as any other settings just like you would for LiIon charging

    Regards,

    Jeff

  • Jeff,

    Thank you for providing direction.
