BQ25970: Can I use it as standalone?

Hello TI team,

now my customer consider BQ25970 for their product, i have some questions.

1. Can I use BQ25970 as standalone? because I saw the simplified application on page 1 of datasheet, there was also BQ2589x and PD controller.

2. Can I charge LiFePo4 battery with BQ25970?

3. is I2C communication necessary to control BQ25970?

4. in BQ25970EVM-893 i can see 2 BQ25970 ICs. what is the purpose of 2 ICs on 1 EVM?

  • Hi Chase,

    1) The BQ25970 is a switched cap charger which is designed for high charging efficiency in CC (constant current) mode. However, the BQ25970 cannot handle pre-charge and termination on its own, so it must be paired with a "main"/"primary" charger (such as the BQ2589x) in order to implement the full battery charging profile.

    2) For LiFePO4 battery charging, select a host-controlled main/primary charger that can set the correct charge profile through software control. Please see this related E2E thread for more details:

     3) Yes, I2C communication is required in order to control the BQ25970.

    4) Parallel BQ25970 chargers can be used in higher power systems to reduce the power losses in the device and improve the thermal performance.
