TPS3825-Q1: Hiccup mode power saving with power on reset

Part Number: TPS3825-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS3825, TPL5110,

Hi Team,
for power saving during standby mode, I would like to use the the TPS3825 RESET pin to switch on and off a pMOS that enables the uP 5V supply: when the uP switches on, it makes its evaluation and if the standby mode must continue it force the MR low so RESET goes high and the pMOS is switched off and for the time-out period the uP is switched off because 5V supply is not present. After the time-out period the sequence repeats, as long as the uP sends back the MR command. Otherwise, if the MR is not asserted then the system exits the standby mode, remaining active.

1) Do you think the system could work? it would be a similar function of using the TPL5110, which I can not use because it's not P2P compatible.
2) The time-out period after MR goes high is actually the t-delay time ? if this is true, could you suggest a similar alternative component (sot-23) with a t-delay of around 1.2-1.6 seconds?
3) Other/different components suggestion for this function ? they shall have a P2P alternative (as a back-up solution in case of purchasing problem)

Thank you in advance
Alberto Carlotti

  • Hi Alberto,

See my response below in green.

    1) Do you think the system could work? it would be a similar function of using the TPL5110, which I can not use because it's not P2P compatible.

Yes, I believe your idea will work.  The only concern I have is the FET drive capability.  The TPS3825-Q1 has a push-pull output for both reset pins.  You may need to buffer the reset signal if you are wanting to have fast response time.

    2) The time-out period after MR goes high is actually the t-delay time ? if this is true, could you suggest a similar alternative component (sot-23) with a t-delay of around 1.2-1.6 seconds?

The t-delay time is listed below:

    3) Other/different components suggestion for this function ? they shall have a P2P alternative (as a back-up solution in case of purchasing problem)

    I don't believe there is p2p alternative.

  • Hi Ben,

Thank you for your response and suggestions.

With a longer reset t-delay (around 1 second) are there other similar Part Number I could evaluate?

If using one with programmable t-delay via capacitor, do you think my idea still make sense? my concern would be if relying on a capacitor value over time and temperature would be so reliable, but maybe I'm wrong.

Thank you for what you can answer.

  • Hi Alberto,

If you want to keep p2p capability, then there is no device.  If you have flexibility of pinout, you can try the TLV840M, where you can program the delay time via capacitor.  See below:

Yes,  your idea still makes sense.  Most ceramic caps have a +/-10% tolerance and will be reliable over temp if you choose a X5R or X7R.

  • Hi Ben,

Okay! thank you for the fast response and for your support.

    Best regards

  • Hi Alberto,

Glad to be of help!  Good luck to you!
