BQ25120AEVM: Test setup diagram

Hello there,

I am having some trouble getting started with the BQ25120A EVM, which I purchased to evaluate the BQ25125.

1. There is an initial setup image asking to connect 2 power supplies, but doesn't mention anything about connecting the battery that needs to be charged. Instead, there is an ambiguous connection diagram connecting PS#2 to what I think is the battery connector (image below). What is the purpose of this?

2. What is VPMID for? And which pin/setup do I use to see the charging of the battery without connecting it to the PC?

    The user guide specifically uses a Keithley 2400 series sourcemeter (SMU) to simulate a battery. The SMU can act as a power supply and as a current sink, which allows it to act as a battery simulator while allowing user control over the "Battery" voltage. 

    If you would like to test it with an actual battery, you would connect it the positive battery pin to BAT and negative battery pin to GND.

    PMID is used for any load that can take an unregulated voltage of 5V. This is a pin that takes power from IN and/or BAT depending on the state of power sources connected to the device, a functionality of Power Path devices.

    The only way you can see the charging of he battery without connecting it to the would be to measure the voltage over time. If you are able to, the current would also be a helpful measurement to verify.

    Thank you for the clarification, that was very clear. I also had an issue connecting the EVM to the PC.

    1. I was sent the USB2ANY instead of the EV2400, which is a more generic solution, I understand that. The pin connector is not the same, so I had to connect it manually to use the I2C.

    2. I have highlighted my issue in a separate thread, because I think there is a problem with the USB2ANY documentation - the thread is here: e2e.ti.com/.../975558

    My purpose is to be able to talk to the BQ25120A EVM to the PC, but I keep getting the Device ACK Error - can you help with that by any chance?
