TPS2115A: Inrush current affordability at input side

Part Number: TPS2115A

Hi experts,

My customer used TPS2115A in a TYPE-C docking application. recently, met some this chips damage during plug and un-plug test.  they suspected it may caused by inrush current. so they want to know how large inrush current can this device stand up at the input side? any way to reduce this risk? thanks for your suggestions.

  • Hi Yue,

This device is rated up to 1.5A of current or 2.5A of current depending on the package used. Any pulse of current higher than this can damage the device. This device does not have any way to change it output slew rate. Reducing the output capacitor will reduce the inrush current spike. Another source of damage could be the inductive spike cause by the cable inductance when hotplugging the USB cables. For this I would recommend using a TVS diode to clamp the voltage to lower values like 6V.
