BQ2980: Unclear part lifecycle

Part Number: BQ2980

The BQ2980 is a relatively recent part, but although the datasheet talks about factory programmable options constantly it is apparently not available with any customization. What stage of life is this part at? Is it being discontinued? Are there any newer equivalents for small, single-cell devices with independent charge and discharge overcurrent limits?

  • Hi Mark,
BQ2980 is ACTIVE aka not being discontinued.
BQ2980 cannot be programmed by customers. We regularly keep adding new pre-programmed versions (spins). It is our newest 1s protection IC.

  • Hey David,

The datasheet advertises it as "Factory Programmable," which I took to mean I could order custom values. However TI's service system informed me that no further spins of the part were planned, and I was stuck with what was available. Some of the advertised features (ie, the PTC thermal sensor) don't exist on ANY of the stock parts, so that's not exactly truth in advertising.

  • Mark,
I think the datasheet mentions "factory configured" and lists the devices the configurations currently available.
I understand that unfortunately none of these configurations suits your requirements.
