UCC5390: Isolated gate driver and MOSFET circuit to control a Brushed 110V DC Series Motor

Hi,

I am working on a Isolated gate driver (UCC5390SCDR) and MOSFET (STW70N60M2) based drive circuit for 110V brushed DC motor control (Split field series). In this design I would like to employ two MOSFETs where one MOSFET is for common control and other two MOSFETs are for direction control. Control has to ensured both in common and drive path. Block diagram is shown below for your reference. Does this design work for us? Please do suggest. If you share a detailed circuit with all protections, it will be appreciated.

Motor rated voltage - 110V DC, Rated current - 5A, Peak current - 8A.

Thanks for the question!

What gate voltage do you plan to use to drive STW70N60M2? Please note UCC5390SCDR Vcc2 has 12V UVLO setting, the Vcc2 voltage needs to be >13V.

Hi Gangyao,

In the initial testing, we have provided gate voltage as 18V and we are able to get only 14V at the motor terminal. Unable to control the output voltage. What parameters do we need to tune so that output we able to get as 110V. Please do suggest.

Forgot to mention that in place of motor we have connected a rheostat as a load and testing.

Hi,

Here my question is can a single high side MOSFET and a low side MOSFET be used for Motor driving as shown in above diagram? By study I have come to know that half-bridge configuration is being used for motor driving. If i use half bridge configuration, in that case only common or positive control is possible. My requirement is to control both common and positive path of the motor. Please do suggest.

Hi, Lingamurthy, Your idea should be achievable. I think the issue may be the “high-side” switches. You are probably losing voltage due to the voltage across the motor. You really need an isolated power supply to drive those two. You could use something like this: www.ti.com/.../UCC5390SCDEVM-010 This design includes an isolated power supply that will allow you to drive the high-side switches with the correct gate to source voltage.
