BQ76942EVM: REG18 output

Part Number: BQ76942EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76942,

Dear TI team,

I am working on BQ76942EVM and it was working fine. During Charging with <1A suddenly the LOAD mosfet damaged and starts heating after which BMS IC BQ76942 stops responding to Battery Management Studio. Thus I found out that REG18 pin output voltage drops to 0V. All the peripheral components on the boards are fine. Kindly suggest the cause for the same.

Regards,

Somya

  • Hi Somya,

The EVM is an exposed board and subject to shorting from stray conductors contacting the circuitry. You might inspect the area and any attached probes to be sure nothing may have shorted to the board or other connections.  The BQ76942 has body diode protection so it should keep the discharge FET on with charge current if it is above the selected threshold, if not the FET will heat from the V x I power dissipation.  At less than 1 A the FET and board will heat but the package should handle the power.

Check if the part will wake up again.  If damaged it will need to be replaced.  Check that the part gets power in case there are components damaged which are not obvious.
