TPS7A53EVM-031: Bulk Capacitor (C1)

Part Number: TPS7A53EVM-031

Hi Team,

Just a minor clarification on the recommended bulk capacitor to be used in C1 of TPS7A53EVM-031. Section 2.1.2 of the user guide mentions the use of a 47-µF electrolytic capacitor. However, the C1 footprint on the EVM schematic shows the footprint for a 68 µF TPSC686K016R0200 tantalum capacitor. Can our customer use this tantalum capacitor instead of an electrolytic? Will it still fit the footprint on the board?

Thanks in advance!

Kind Regards,

Jejomar

  • Hi Jejomar,

I would recommend that a ceramic capacitor be used at least for a portion of the minimum input capacitance since ceramic capacitors have lower ESR/Impedance and provide better transient performance than tantalum or electrolytic capacitors. Additional bulk capacitors can be added if required by the customer application or to further improve the input supply's transient response. Some Automotive customer like to use electrolytic bulk capacitors which is why they are mentioned in the users guide however due to their higher impedance, these should be in addition to a ceramic capacitor and could be a tantalum if that is desired by the customer.
