TPS737: dropout spec clarification

Part Number: TPS737

Hi Sir,

May I have your help to clarify dropout spec in TPS737 for me?

The dropout is 130mV(typ) and 500mV(max) in EC table. But the dropout curve shows 180mV at 125C and 1A (max).

My question is what kind of condition can make the dropout becomes 500mV?

My customer is looking for LDO solution, 3.8Vin, 3.3Vout, 1A, but we are not sure TPS737 is good solution or not because the dropout 500mV seems very marginal for 3.8Vin to 3.3Vout at 1A.

  • The charts are showing typical characteristics.  The table provides typical characteristics at 25C, and other values over the full operating range, unless noted otherwise.  Thus, the chart show exactly the same value as the table for 25C, and while the chart shows a curve for 125C, this is the 'typical" curve for 125C, and some parts may trend above or below that line.  The worst case spec for the worst case temperature, is the 500mV value in the "EC" table.  For a robust design, that is performance one should expect.  While, most parts will perform closer to the typical values it's not a guarantee.

I would agree that the combination of running the part rated for 1A at 1A, in conjunction with the the parts maximum dropout equaling your design maximum allowed drop out is marginal.  Granted, that you'll likely not be operating at 125C, and most if not all parts would likely meet your spec if you keep the temps down, it does seem unnecessarily close to performance boundary.
