Are there any ICs that can charge Li/SOCL2 batteries?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ21062

Hi TI experts,

A customer inquired for a solution to charge Li/SOCL2 battery.

Are there any items available to TI? Attached the battery specification sheet.

Specification_VEL13353R8257G (3.8V 250F).pdf

Please check it.

Thanks,

Downey Kim.

  • Hi Downey,

From the spec it look like this cell follows a CCCV curve of 2.5 - 3.8V. BQ21062 may be OK, you can set the charging voltage to 3.8V. The min precharge threshold is 2.8V. So you would be charging at the precharge value between 2.5-2.8V (77.5mA max).

I don't think we have any stand alone device that would work here.

    Best regards,

    Nick

  • Hi Downey,

I think we need to confirm with the battery manufacturer that this battery is, in fact, rechargeable after initial charge during production.  If I search on Li/SOCL2 batteries (actually closer to supercaps), most say they are primary (non-rechargeable) the field.  Could you contact the manufacturer and ask them to please provide detailed charging requirements (charger voltage, current, time and temperature) for in the field recharging?

    Regards,

    Jeff
