TPS62743: low-load efficiency

Part Number: TPS62743
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS62840

Hi Team,

I am curious about how the low-load efficiency of TPS62743 is improved with PFM. Is it only dependent on low switching loss?

Could you please explain how these?

Beat Regards,
Tom Liu

  • Hi Tom,

You are correct. Reducing the switching frequency helps a lot in improving the converter efficiency at PFM mode. In very light load conditions, there is a period where the power switches are both off ("pause time") which further reduces the current consumption of the device, which contributes to the efficiency enhancement. And this is not applicable in fixed frequency or forced PWM devices.
The TPS62743 was designed to have a low IQ (current consumption when both power switches are OFF) to ensure high efficiency at low load current conditions. In case you are looking for an improvement to this device. You can check TPS62840, which is best in class in terms of the low IQ.

    Best regards,
