BQ25792: Thermal Issues

Part Number: BQ25792

Hi,

I am using BQ25792 in my application to charge the 3S1P Li-Ion Battery Pack. The charger IC which is working well and communication with the host controller are all fine. But the problem is the BQ chip is heating even there is the battery is not connected. It consumes 60mA at the source side without the battery connected. While charging the battery at 1A, the chip temperature goes to more than 100 degrees Celsius. Help me to solve the problem....

Input Voltage: 12VDC

Charging Voltage: 12.45V

Charging Current: 1A

  • Hi Nishanth,

As a I mentioned in previous post, the ACDRV1 pin should not be tied to VBUS if not used.  It must be tied to ground.  The charge pump output at ACDRV1 is likely damaged and causing the 60mA source current at the input side.

Regarding the thermal issue at high charge current, the package pins, which are used for heat sinking, must to tied to large copper pours, similar to the BQ25792EVM PCB.  If not, then the IC will not be able to dissipate the heat.
